breaking news

As the friend I've been bitching to about this would say, "people are heathens."

The house next door to me continues to cause grief.  It's a large and very attractive Prairie Foursquare, and today it's been painted white and is having it's original three over one sashes and storms thrown away in favor of blank expressionless vinyl.

Yes flippers, take a historic home sandwiched between two big restored Victorians and paint it white, black and plastic.  Surely this will bring the buyers running....

    1. I'm just thankful I don't see much of the house when I'm inside mine. Talk about ruining the view!

  2. This breaks my heart, because flippers and most real estate agents don't understand old houses and historic neighborhoods. I'm really sorry that this happened right next door.

    1. I'm completely sickened over it. They were in perfect shape and all had nice new triple track storms - they were just as efficient as the crap they're currently putting in....

  3. Run over and grab those windows. Someone doing a restoration may be able to use them.

    1. Here's the kicker - these are the people that forced my town into issuing citations and court summons to me for my stored building materials, fighting which took all my time and energy this summer. So no, they're not giving me shit :-(

    2. The town cited you for storing building materials? You're renovating..

      WTF.

Send me their address and they WILL receive bags of flaming dog shit.

    3. The thought had entered my mind too. BUT, the Borough was kindly ignoring us, but they're required to act on complaints... The ridiculous part is if someone had just knocked on my door I'd happily have cleaned up a bit.

  4. Or they might sell the house to someone who knows about historic houses and will be glad to have them to reinstall.

    1. I'm really hoping they're storing the original windows in the basement or the attic so that can indeed happen!

  5. Jerks. I've started tearing away the wood paneling someone brilliantly put up in my 1906 Victorian, some of the original trim is underneath, but damaged. The choices people make in the name of 'upgrades'....

Be sure and grab anything you can out of the salvage pile!

    1. Tearing off paneling is always terrifying, you never know what you'll find underneath. Sadly the windows seem to have gone directly into their trucks - although I'll check the curb tonight since it is trashday tomorrow...

    2. Maybe the stuff is reclaimable from the local landfill.

    3. Sadly, of all the crazy things, Pittsburgh doesn't have public landfills.

    4. No public landfills? What do they do with stuff? Our landfill is practically a community gathering place :-)

  6. The new owners of the Gothic Mansion are renovating and, from what I've heard, I don't think I should ever drive by to see what they've done. :(

    1. I'm so sorry to hear that! The same happened at the first witchy little vic I restored. I guess we really can't home again *sigh.* Hope all is going well at the cabin though, can't wait to see an update before the snows move it...

    2. Haha, I'm afraid the snow might move in before we do. It's taking forever! I have to say, I like renovating much more than building. I had much more control. :)

  7. People are heathens. Stupid, uneducated heathens. There is all sorts of information on the internet showing that vinyl windows are not any more energy efficient than original wood-sash windows with properly fitting storms. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir here. I just had a conversation with a woman who wants to buy the 1839 Greek Revival that Marion restored and she's hellbent to put replacement windows in it as well. Stupid, stupid, stupid people.

    1. That's what astounds me - who doesn't do research before doing such an expensive project? I'll never forget when I went to buy my first truck at 17, my dad took me to used car lots - the lesson? Never, ever, trust the promises of someone trying to sell you something! These plastic-touting people are worse than used car salesmen, what they're selling can't be fixed for any price....

  8. Is this the house down the hill or up?

    1. Up the hill, I love the guy down from us... I just want the house to sell asap, then, only one trouble-maker left.
