It's nice that you're really trying to keep the house true to its period. It looks like the new master suite will be fantastic when it's done.Sharon Kwilterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00204757096377140896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388255097457987708.post-63213781450324189912015-07-22T11:21:08.018-04:002015-07-22T11:21:08.018-04:00The master is quite small, so we couldn't sacr...The master is quite small, so we couldn't sacrifice any unnecessary wallspace to a second door, nor is there room in either the laundry or closet for access between them. It's all very convenient as built actually, and it saved us from doing any serious changes to the original house. This was made harder as we had 9 months to get the plumbing and electrical redone to satisfy our 203k loan, which led to major decisions I would have rather not made so quickly. On the other hand, the route we took made no structural changes (one of the major reasons we chose not to move the door), meaning any dissatisfaction with the result would harm our pocketbook, but not the house...Mayfair Mistresshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12389579867450001602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388255097457987708.post-33341537445698532422015-07-21T16:57:02.819-04:002015-07-21T16:57:02.819-04:00No worries Ross, I actually would have loved to im...No worries Ross, I actually would have loved to implement your plan. The walls are already built, accounting for issues not seen on the floorplan. We needed to maximize light into the (very dark) bedroom, and wall space in the closet, and account for the radiator that sits on the wall behind the doorway from the bedroom to the bathroom. I'll add your drawing though, and cry about what could have been!Mayfair Mistresshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12389579867450001602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388255097457987708.post-26549344104733639822015-07-21T16:44:25.288-04:002015-07-21T16:44:25.288-04:00As I read this, I was thinking along the exact sam...As I read this, I was thinking along the exact same lines as Ross. Please share his sketch so that the rest of us can see it.

I am right there with you about the stress of restoration/renovation/updating an old house. Sometimes, the choices are easy and go off perfectly. Most of the time, though, we walk a tightrope between historical sensitivity and modern conveniences.Connie in Hartwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09127877285792861166noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388255097457987708.post-18790622770935880742015-07-21T15:04:09.760-04:002015-07-21T15:04:09.760-04:00I certainly appreciate the old house dilemma:
How...I certainly appreciate the old house dilemma:

How can I make the house work for today without destroying it?

And I concur with your solution: lose 1 bedroom out of 9, to create an an expansive master suite.

I am uncertain how much is built yet, but may I boldly propose an alternative plan?

What I really love about old houses is that they have nice shaped rooms. But the insertion of the laundry room and closet creates...a very odd shaped master bathroom.

I drew a quick suggestion for your reflection, but do not not how to attach a plan to this comment, so will send it to your email address.

I apologize in advance for such imprudence!

Rosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11809279474923305715noreply@blogger.com
